How Many Hypnotherapy Sessions Will I Need?

October 18, 2026 · 4 min read

It's one of the first questions people ask me, and it's a fair one. You want to know what you're signing up for, in time and in money. The honest answer is that it depends, but that answer is only useful if I explain what it depends on. So let's walk through it.

I'll also tell you how I structure sessions, so you know exactly how the decision gets made and that you're never locked into more than you want.

Why there's no single number

Hypnotherapy isn't a fixed course like a prescription. It's closer to training. How long training takes depends on where you're starting from, what you're working toward, and how much you practice between sessions. Three people who all come in for stress can need very different amounts of support.

Be cautious of anyone who promises a precise number of sessions before they've understood your situation. A specific number given in advance is usually marketing, not assessment.

What affects how many sessions you need

  • What you're working on. A single, clear habit, such as smoking, is often more focused than a broad goal like feeling calmer in every part of life.
  • How long the pattern has been there. A habit that has run for twenty years has had a lot of practice. It can still change, but it may need more repetition.
  • How many threads are involved. Sometimes one pattern turns out to be connected to others: sleep, work stress, an old belief about yourself. Each thread may need attention.
  • Practice between sessions. This is the big one. The people who listen to their recordings and use their tools during the week tend to move faster than those who only engage during the session itself.
  • Your other support. If you're also working with a doctor or therapist, hypnotherapy fits alongside that care, and the pace may be shaped by it.

How I structure sessions

We always begin with a one-hour intro session ($199). In that hour we map the pattern you want to change, you experience hypnosis for yourself, and you leave with a clear plan and your first tool. You also receive a recording of the session so you can keep practicing at home.

After the intro session, you decide what comes next. Some people book follow-up sessions ($260 each, one hour) one at a time, targeting one pattern per session. Others prefer the structure of the 6-session package. For deeper, longer work, there's the ArcState program, which uses 90-minute sessions. For package details, get in touch and we'll talk it through.

Every session is held online over Zoom, so you can work from wherever you feel most comfortable. You can see the full options on the sessions page.

What progress tends to look like

Change rarely arrives as one dramatic moment. More often it shows up quietly. You notice you didn't react the way you used to. A craving passes before you've really registered it. You sleep through a night you expected to be restless. Those small signs are worth paying attention to, because they tell us the work is landing.

I'll ask you about those signs at the start of each follow-up. They guide what we work on next, and they help us decide together whether you need more sessions or whether you're ready to continue on your own with your recordings.

Getting the most from each session

  1. Come with one clear focus. "I want to stop reaching for my phone the moment I feel bored" gives us more to work with than "I want to be better."
  2. Listen to your recording. Repetition is how the nervous system learns. A short daily listen does more than an occasional long one.
  3. Notice and note. Jot down moments when the old pattern showed up and moments when it didn't. Bring them to your next session.
  4. Be honest. If something isn't working, tell me. Adjusting the approach is part of the process, not a sign of failure.

When to pause or stop

You're always in charge of how many sessions you book. If you feel you've got what you came for, it's fine to stop. If life gets busy, it's fine to pause and come back later. And if hypnotherapy isn't the right fit for what you're facing, I'll tell you honestly and suggest other kinds of support worth considering.

If you're dealing with a serious mental health condition, please talk with your doctor or a licensed therapist. Hypnotherapy is a wellness practice. It works alongside medical and mental health care, never in place of it.

A good first step

If you're still unsure where you stand, the free Stoic Regulation Index takes about four minutes and gives you a snapshot of how your nervous system handles pressure. It's a useful starting point for our first conversation.

And if you'd like to know what the first hour actually involves, read what happens in your first hypnotherapy session. From there, the number of sessions becomes something we work out together, based on what you notice, not a figure picked in advance.

Frequently asked questions

How many hypnotherapy sessions do most people need?
It depends on what you're working on, how long the pattern has been there, and how much you practice between sessions. We start with a one-hour intro session and decide together what comes next, with no obligation to book more.
Do I have to commit to a package?
No. You can book follow-up sessions one at a time. The 6-session package and the ArcState program are options for people who prefer more structure.
What happens between sessions?
You receive a recording of each session to practice with at home. Regular listening and noticing what changes during the week help the work settle in.
