Hypnotherapy for Addiction

Hypnotherapy can support your recovery by working on the thought and stress patterns behind cravings. It works alongside medical care, treatment, and recovery programs, never in place of them.

Important. Hypnotherapy supports, and does not replace, medical detox, addiction treatment, or recovery programs. If you are in crisis, or stopping could be medically risky for you, please contact your doctor or call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357. It is free, confidential, and open 24 hours a day. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Let me start with what this page is, and what it isn't. Addiction is serious, and recovery usually needs more than one kind of support. Hypnotherapy is one of those supports. It does not replace medical detox, addiction treatment, or a recovery program, and I will always encourage you to keep your doctor and treatment team involved.

What hypnotherapy can offer is work on the patterns that sit underneath the behavior: the stress that builds before a craving, the thoughts that justify the next drink or hit, and the habits that have formed around it. My approach brings together hypnosis, Stoic philosophy, and NLP to work on those patterns directly.

The patterns behind cravings

A craving rarely arrives out of nowhere. It usually follows a pattern with three parts:

  • A trigger. A place, a person, a time of day, or a feeling such as loneliness, anger, or exhaustion.
  • A story. The thought that bridges the trigger and the action: "I've earned it," "just this once," "I can't handle this without it."
  • A body state. Tension, restlessness, or a nervous system pushed outside the range where it can cope.

Substances and compulsive behaviors often become a fast way to change that body state. Over time, the brain learns the shortcut, and the loop tightens. I explain the mechanics in the habit loop, and the body side in the window of tolerance.

Seen this way, a craving is less of a mystery. It is a signal that one or more of those three parts has been activated, and each of them is something we can work on.

How hypnotherapy supports recovery

In our sessions, we work on each part of the pattern:

  • Regulating the body. Hypnosis gives your nervous system practice at settling, so you have a way to come down from stress that doesn't involve the substance or behavior.
  • Rewriting the story. With NLP, we work on the inner voice and mental pictures that make a craving feel urgent or justified, so they lose some of their pull.
  • Strengthening choice. Stoic philosophy draws a clear line between what you control and what you don't. You can't control whether a craving shows up. You can practice what you do next.

We rehearse that next step in hypnosis: the trigger arrives, the craving rises, and you respond in the way you've chosen. Rehearsal won't make cravings disappear, but it can make the new response more familiar, so it's easier to reach for when it counts.

Working alongside your treatment

I see hypnotherapy as one part of a wider circle of support. That circle might include your doctor, an addiction treatment program, a therapist or counselor, a recovery group, and the people close to you. Hypnotherapy can sit alongside any of these.

If you're in treatment or a recovery program, please let your providers know you're working with me, and tell me about them too. If you're just starting to look for help, your doctor is the right first call, especially with alcohol or certain medications, where stopping suddenly can carry real medical risks. The SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 can also point you to treatment options near you.

What sessions look like

  • Intro session (1 hour, $199). We map the patterns around your cravings: the triggers, the stories, and the body states. You experience hypnosis for yourself and leave with a clear plan and your first tool for calming your nervous system.
  • Follow-up sessions (1 hour, $260 each). Each one targets one pattern, such as evening cravings, a social trigger, or a stress spike, and rehearses a new response.
  • Between sessions. A short daily practice to reinforce the work and give your body a reliable way to settle.

Every session is private, one-to-one, and online. You stay aware and in control throughout, and nothing in hypnosis can make you do anything against your values.

What progress can look like

Recovery rarely moves in a straight line, and I won't pretend otherwise. Progress in our work tends to show up in small, practical ways rather than dramatic breakthroughs:

  • More space. A little more time between the urge and the action, and a little more choice inside that time.
  • Earlier noticing. Catching the trigger or the story sooner, before the body state has fully taken over.
  • A way back after a hard day. A routine you can reach for on your own to settle your body.

If there is a lapse, we treat it as information rather than failure. We look at what led to it, make sure your doctor or treatment team knows where that's appropriate, and keep going.

Who this is for

This work is for adults who want support changing a dependence on alcohol, substances, or a compulsive behavior such as gambling, and who are ready to do that work alongside their other support. It's for parents, workers, students, retirees, and business owners alike. Addiction doesn't pick a type, and neither do I.

Some people come to me early, when they've started to notice a pattern they don't like. Others come after years of treatment, looking for one more kind of support. Both are welcome, and we start from wherever you are.

It is not a substitute for emergency care, detox, or medical supervision. If you're unsure whether hypnotherapy is right for you at this stage, book a free consultation and we'll talk it through honestly.

A word on shame

Many people carry a heavy load of shame about addiction, and shame tends to feed the very loop we're trying to change. The Stoics offer a useful view here: what matters most is not what happened before, but what you choose now. We work from where you are, without judgment, one pattern at a time.

Self-compassion isn't letting yourself off the hook. It's what makes honest change possible, because it's very hard to work on a pattern you're too ashamed to look at.

Hypnotherapy is a wellness service. It does not diagnose or treat medical or mental health conditions, and it works alongside care from a doctor or licensed professional, never in place of it.
