It's one of the first questions people ask me: can hypnosis really work through a screen? The short answer is that many people find online hypnotherapy works very well, and some find it easier than meeting in an office. All of my sessions are online over Zoom, so let me explain how it works and why.
Why hypnosis translates to video
Hypnosis is not something one person does to another. It's a state of focused, relaxed attention that you enter yourself, with a guide helping you get there. What matters is the guidance and your willingness to follow it, and both of those travel perfectly well over a video call.
In practice, the key ingredients of a session are the same online as in person:
- A clear conversation about what you want to change and what's getting in the way.
- A calm, focused state guided by voice, which works just as well through headphones.
- Rehearsal of a new response while you're relaxed enough for it to take hold.
Why some people find online sessions easier
Being in your own space can help. Three advantages come up again and again:
- Familiar surroundings. It's often easier to relax on your own couch than in an unfamiliar office.
- No commute. You're not rushing in from traffic, and you don't have to drive home afterward. You can rest for a few minutes when the session ends.
- Practice where you live. The new response is rehearsed in the same place you'll use it, which can make it easier to carry into daily life.
How a Zoom session works
- We talk first. I ask what's been happening since we last spoke and what you'd like to focus on today.
- You settle into a focused state. With your eyes closed and headphones on, I guide you into calm, absorbed attention. You stay aware and in control the whole time.
- We do the work, then reflect. We rehearse the new response, then I guide you back, and we talk about what you noticed and what to practice next.
Each session is one hour, and you receive a recording to listen back to between sessions. You can read a fuller walkthrough in What to Expect.
How to prepare
- A private, quiet room where you won't be interrupted for an hour.
- Headphones for clearer, more immersive audio.
- A stable connection and a charged device with Zoom set up.
- A comfortable chair where you can sit back and relax.
Silence your phone, close other tabs, and log on a few minutes early so we can start relaxed rather than rushed.
Is it private?
Sessions are one-to-one, and what you share stays between us. Choose a spot where others in your home won't overhear, and let them know you'll be unavailable for the hour.
What if I don't feel hypnotized?
This worry comes up a lot. Many people expect hypnosis to feel dramatic, like being asleep or switched off. In reality, it usually feels like deep relaxation and focus. You hear everything, you remember the session, and you might even wonder whether anything happened. That's normal. What matters is the rehearsal that happens in that calm state, not how unusual it feels.
Getting the most from your recordings
Each session includes a recording, and listening between sessions helps the change settle. A few tips:
- Listen at a regular time, such as before bed or after work.
- Use headphones and a comfortable place where you won't be disturbed.
- Never listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention.
Is online hypnotherapy safe?
For most people, yes. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention, and you remain aware and in control throughout. You can open your eyes and stop at any moment, and you'll remember the session. If the connection drops, nothing bad happens: you simply become alert, and we reconnect. A few sensible precautions apply, such as choosing a safe, comfortable place to sit and not joining from a car. If you have a history of psychosis, dissociation, or another serious mental health condition, please talk to your doctor before starting. I cover safety in more detail in is hypnosis safe?
After a session, give yourself a few minutes before jumping back into email or driving anywhere. Sit quietly, have a glass of water, and notice how you feel. That short pause helps the work settle.
Who online hypnotherapy suits
I work online with anyone who wants to change how they think, feel, and respond: parents fitting a session around school pickup, students, people who work long hours, retirees, and business owners. I'm based in White Plains, New York, and work with people across Westchester County and beyond. Online sessions mean location simply isn't a barrier.
